Expanding Our Perception Everywhere

Monitoring strategic assets — including our natural resources — requires more than simply tracking them: it requires perceiving them. To perceive means to understand, to learn, and to evolve from the random and uncertain nature of these systems. It means being prepared to deal with the unknown, to grasp the impacts of our actions, and to make decisions in complex scenarios.

Achieving this elevated level of perception, on an unprecedented scale, demands the integration of sensor networks, space technologies, and data science. It requires a highly qualified team, sharp critical thinking, and strong institutional partnerships.

This is the vision that guides the Perception Project: to make possible a new level of environmental intelligence for monitoring our strategic assets.

The Perception System is a data collection and integration architecture based on satellite infrastructure that proposes new systems engineering approaches, innovative operational concepts, and services rooted in space missions. Its goal is to develop space technologies and services aimed at tracking and monitoring strategic assets — such as Brazil's biomes and national critical infrastructure — propelling the country into a new era of terrestrial and space-based data science. Satellite technologies and geospatial data hold vast potential to support the sustainable transition of Brazil's productive sector, while also playing a key role in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The project's first major outcome is the Perception Data Platform, integrated with the HDL satellite communication network and the operational concept for the Perceive space segment — core components of the system architecture.

The structural units of the proposal are two pilot projects: the K34 Tower, integrated into the Large-Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Program in the Amazon (LBA), and the Cerrado Tower, located at the Água Limpa Farm of the University of Brasília (UnB). The latter represents an experimental field of approximately 4,500 hectares, dedicated to scientific development, technological innovation, and demonstration of environmental solutions. The infrastructure of the Perception System expands through the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and fixed ground cameras, which support real-time environmental monitoring actions.

One of the first practical applications of this data is the measurement and monitoring of water resources and carbon flux — elements essential for understanding and protecting our ecosystems.

Welcome to the Perception Project. Join us in developing cutting-edge space technologies and innovative services to track and monitor Brazil's strategic assets.

Learning through the senses and mind

The word perception comes from the Latin word percepio, meaning receiving, collecting, become aware through the mind or senses. The project logo represents a door to infinity and captures the idea of the proposed system being the frontier to the unknown, the door to be opened to expand our vision and sense of our environment and reality. This is the meaning of the name, a poetic idea proposed and discussed over the centuries by philosophers, musicians and many others who chose to deeply feel the world in which we live.

The Perception project is an initiative that aims to create new technologies, business models and methods to optimize and expand our ability to perceive the environment and its modification throughout our evolution. We seek to expand the perception of our planet through the generation of data, its structuring and analysis as information, identification of trends and extrapolation to future scenarios.
